One pool for lessons, open swim and birthday parties

Cannonball is a family swim school with one pool. We teach ages 3 to 12 in five cap-colored levels, open the pool to members on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons, and host birthday parties on Sundays.

A warm indoor pool with a shallow play area, a small slide and floating mats, the water still and the pool empty

Lessons

Five levels, five cap colors

Each level has a cap color, an age range and a short list of what swimmers practice. A placement visit tells us where to start, and the instructor decides when a swimmer moves up.

  1. Bubbles

Yellow cap, ages 3 to 5
    Skills
    • Walking in and out by the steps

    • Blowing bubbles

    • Getting the face wet, one step at a time

    • Traveling along the wall with the instructor close

    Moving up

When bubbles and the walk down the steps are steady, the instructor suggests Floats.

  2. Floats

Orange cap, ages 4 to 6
    Skills
    • Floating on the front and the back with support

    • Kicking while holding a kickboard

    • Reaching for the wall and holding on

    • Putting the whole face in the water

    Moving up

When floating with support and a steady kick are in place, the instructor suggests Kicks.

  3. Kicks

Green cap, ages 5 to 8
    Skills
    • Kicking on the front and on the back

    • Pushing off the wall and gliding

    • Pulling with the arms while holding a board

    • Turning the head to the side to breathe

    Moving up

When the kick and the glide are steady on both sides, the instructor suggests Arms and breathing.

  4. Arms and breathing

Blue cap, ages 6 to 10
    Skills
    • Freestyle arms with a breath to the side

    • Back crawl arms

    • Swimming across the width of the pool

    • Treading water with the instructor close by

    Moving up

When freestyle and back crawl cross the width of the pool, the instructor suggests Strokes together.

  5. Strokes together

Purple cap, ages 8 to 12
    Skills
    • Freestyle and back crawl linked together

    • Breaststroke kick

    • Swimming a length of the pool

    • Pushing off the wall in a streamline

    Moving up

There is no level after this one; the instructor sets new goals with each swimmer every session.

Sample levels.

Every swimmer moves at their own pace.
